Apprenticeships develop employees who can do many different tasks. They usually involve several related groups of skills that allow the apprentice to practice a particular trade, and they take place over a long period of time in which the apprentice works for, and with, the senior skilled worker. Apprenticeships are especially appropriate for jobs requiring production skills based job.
Improving coordination with public education staff to improve support for apprenticeship as a career option:
- Improving counseling support for apprentices;
- Changing the system of financing of apprenticeships;
- Increasing apprenticeship opportunities in public-funded undertakings;
- Increasing training capacity to match demand;
- Establishing training ratios.
- To meet the needs of this dynamic sector, apprenticeships must draw from the strengths of the traditional model while eliminating its shortcomings, and must be able to evolve as required to satisfy the skill requirements of the industry of the future.
- Digital literacy, IT and communication skills, flexibility and adaptability will be critical for staff in the sector in future, and this requires a different approach to training and skills acquisition, as well as better promotion of the exciting opportunities which make print an attractive choice for career seekers.
- To address these issues, the Project has considered the traditional apprenticeship model, measured that against industry experience and the expectation of future needs, and is examining a more contemporary approach to training and skills acquisition.
