Apprenticeship is a process. An apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with on-the-job training and often some accompanying study (classroom work and reading). People who successfully complete an apprenticeship reach the "journeyman" or professional certification level of competence.

Apprentice is a beginner; a learner. One who is learning a trade or occupation, especially as a member. A person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages. An apprentice is a person who works for an employer and gains the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to become qualified in their chosen occupation.
